Control tells the fascinating story of the manipulation of sound, originally embodied by one man, a little-known but major figure of the 20th century: Harold Burris-Meyer. An engineer and man of the theatre, his main contributions were inventing sound equipment and experimenting in behavioural science. From the 1930s, when fascist and capitalist propaganda erupted, he was a major player in the first attempts to manipulate the masses through sound.
In this book Juliette Volcler has two objectives: to paint a vivid picture of the period – its social and cultural context, its broken dreams, its successful experiments – and give us the critical tools we need when faced with the rapidly changing sound environment of the 21st century.
Juliette Volcler is the producer of L’Intempestive on Radio Galère and editorial coordinator of Syntone (on line and hardcopy) sound magazine. She is also the author of Le Son comme arme. Les usages policiers et militaires du son (Sound as a weapon. Military and police uses of sound (La Découverte, 2011).
