This work presents a different history of yoga: that of a practice which, in order to avoid obsolescence, has adapted constantly and which, since the beginning of the 20th century, has deliberately sought to conquer the West.
The journalist Marie Kock has been practicing yoga for 10 years and teaches it. This dual experience has allowed her to conduct unique research from India to Thailand, and California to France. Through a mixture of reports, interviews with academics and yoga practitioners, historical archives and personal experience, this work provides a lively, accessible account which brings to light a little known story which is part of the ongoing processes of cultural globalization in today’s world.
Marie Kock is a journalist. Since 2014 she has been the editor of the society pages of Stylist magazine. She has been practicing yoga for 10 years and has taught it since the end of 2017.
