Using both chronological- and thematically-themed approaches, this work examines the major questions concerning the structure of the European continent. Was the building of Europe motivated by France, Germany, or the U.S.A.? Is the European Union socialist or neoliberal? To what extent does it suffer from a “democratic deficit”? What does it mean to be “European”? Is the Europe of industry, the Europe of Airbus and Ariane, even possible?
While Warlouzet focuses primarily on the European Community and the European Union, other organizations such as the European Council and even NATO are not ignored, nor are plans for a European armed forces or the European Health Community (CES), which regularly crop up in proposals.
