When we talk of clusters (an industrial cluster or a competitive cluster), we immediately think of the legendary success of Silicon Valley. But do we know the complex, hidden mechanism behind their development? What tools do economics and other disciplines have to analyze them? Does the return on public investment meet the hopes of those in government? This work provides an instructive synthesis of these questions.
Jérôme Vicente is an economics professor at Sciences Po in Toulouse and head of LEREPS (Laboratoire d’études et de recherche sur l’économie, les politiques et les systèmes sociaux - Studies and Research laboratory in Economics, Policies and Social Systems). He is a member of the steering committee of SMS (the structure of social worlds) at the University of Toulouse. He specialises in localised technological dynamics, networks of innovative businesses and the policies of clusters.
